THE GENERAL ELECTION.
RESULT OF THE POLL.
Judging by the dense and excited crowd which thronged Dowling street, in front of the Otago Daily Times and Witness office, last night, the interest in the polling was ac keen as ever, and the uncertainty -which prevailed in many quarters as to the rcsu.fc of the local option poll added to th\ zest with whioh the people patiently waited from 8 o'clock until midnight for the promised figures. The arrangements made by the Ofago Daily Times and Witnees Company enabled th» waiting throng to watch the development of events. By means ef two powerful lanterns, the bulletins conveying the items of election intelligence wer» flashed upon large screens, the figures being intersper?>ed with photographs of the candidates and other appropriate pictures. The lusty and continuous cheering gave evidence that the lantern chow was highly appreciated. The first real burst of excitement recurred when the final figures went up for the Caversham contest, but the climax was reached when the re?ult of the Duiiedin City election was flashed on t!>e ecrcen, with Bedford topping the poll. Corapkte returns of the polling were not available when we went to press, Tbut the figures appended are sufficient to give an idea of the general trend of things, most of the important electorates being represented in our list. The polling for the local option poll was very heavy, but owing to the absence of definite information concerning the actual number of voters it is not possible to si ate the result. So far us the figures are available-, it would appear that no-license has been carried in Ashburton by <ncr 100 votes, and probably in Chalmers, Bruce, and Newtown (Wellington), and was lost in Invercargill by only nine votes, reduction being carried in the latter electorate. Reduction is reported tc have been carried, subject to revision of th.« figures, in Dunedin City, Awarua, Thames, Caversham, Taieri, Napier, Lyttelton, Avon, and Oamaru.
