OWAKA.
November 22.— Quite a httl bit of excitement was caused throughout the listrict when it became known that our worthy citizen Mr Young waa going to oppose Mi Sauntters, our present councillor, who has been in office for some time. Two such popular men standing, it was felt that the contest would be a pretty equal one; and so it turned out, for when the returns were all in it wa9 found that Mr Saunder<s had «on the contest by 38 votes.
Bridge. — I notice that the contract is otit for the new bridge at Duttou's — M* M'F.irlane, of Bilclutha, being the successful tenderer. New Hall. — The opening of tho new Oddfellows' Hall took place last week, and was largely attended. The unit-rd choirs from the different churches rendered several concerted pieces very nicely. Several of the officers from the Dunedin Lodge took part in the service, while Mr D. Written, secretary to the lodge, read the reports. Thanks were returned to Mr W. Walton for bo kindly lending hip organ, afte-i which tk* youn? people indulged in a dance, which lasted till daylight. \Vea>thei.— Of late the weathai has been so gloomy that we are longing for a eight of our old friend " Sol." The vumal late- frosts have, however, kept well away, so that th<- pasturv and our orchards are looking well.
