THE STATE COAL MINE.
(From Our Own Corrispondent.) UREYMOUTH, November 4. Tt will be nine months before coal for shipment oan be obtained from the State coal mine here for shipment. There are 78 men at work on the railway line and 25 opening up the coal mines. A commencement will be made with laying the lines at once, but a good deal of permanent way has yet to be formed. The men at the mines are driving three tunnels. One is in a chain and has to go eight ohains farther to strike the 19ft coal struck in the borehole. The ether two tunnels just commenced have to be driven seven chains each to tap the coal seam also bored on. The coal is a splendid sample, and superior to anything yet found on the Coast. The three tunnels, though at different levels, owing to a " jump up," will get coal in free levels. The distance from port is about six miles.
