AN ENGLISH RACE BOOK

A copy of the official race card for the Alexandra Park (Eng.) July meeting has been kindly lent me for perusal. It is an eight-page card, of good paper and well typed, but the information concerning the fields is very meagre. The- owner's name, hors, age, weight, and colours of the rider is the full extent of the information, and the sire and dam, of a horse is not given except where it is running unnamed — of whom, no less than 16 horses were engaged in the six races on the card. The first race was timed to start at 2 o'clock and the last at 4.40. The strength of the fields colouring on. the card were fairly strong, and in a five-furlong event no less than 40 horses claimed engagement. In another event the field numbered 25 on the book, but only seven faced the starter. In a couple of notes it stated that, "any person distributing handbills, or throwing paper about the park would be immediately removed and his admission money forfeited," and "no itinerant vendors allowed." The cost of the card is set down at sixpence — a sum well worth the book.
