SECOND DAY.

The weather was gloriously fine for the second day of the C.J.C. spring meeting, and a splendid attendance was the result. Bellman made a runaway victory in the Hurdle Race, and Vladimii won the Criterion Handicap in good style. The Stepniak colt ran home half a length in front > of Pallas, but he won with a good ''"-^l in hand. Achillea put up a really * in the Juvenile Plate, as he won > i pull, and did the trip in lmin 1 3-s»ei , . _k! the meeting between, the Medallion colt aud Cruciform m the Jubilee Cup is being looked forward to with a great deal of interest. Welbeck moved a trifle sore in bis preliminary for tii" Derby, hut on his Cup form he looked to we an excellent chance of securing the Tamable stake. -Derrett's instructions were to make a solid paca, and, in company with Porirua, the race was carried out at a merry pace. Turning into the straight Orloff was five or six lengths behind j Welbeck and Porirua, who lay alongside each other. The race appeared to be Welbeck's 100 yards from home, but Orloff put in his claim and" got on terms. From, that out Mr Stead's representative went on, and won comfortably. Within a few strides of the post Porirua momentarily headed Welbeck, but the latter gamely came again, and defeated Porirua for second place by a short half-length. On returning to scale Orloff was greeted with several sounds of applause, in distinct contrast to tke reception that was accorded to Siege Gun after his win in the Metropolitan. When the latter was entering the weighing enclosure the habitues of the outside enclosure crowded on to the course, and a packed mass of people gave vent to probably the greatest hostile demonstration fchafc has ever been witnessed on any course in this island. Loud and prolonged booting was continued long after the horsea were weighed in and taken away to their boxes, ana when the weight flag was hoisted the hostile demonstration was taken up with, renewed vigour. A counter demonstration was also sent up, but was comparatively feeble to the voicing of the oufeide people, who were responsible for most of i the noise. Much sympathy is felt generally I for Mr Stead. Siege Gun was meeting Canteen on 81b and Halberdier on- 161b better terms than they met in the Cup, and over a half-mile shorter course, which could be calculated to suit Canteen and Halberdier as well as any horee in the field. Glenaladale and Welbeck, who also finished in front of Siege Gun in the Cup, were out of the way, and a? the latter won with not less than half a stone in hand, there is no doubt that there was a reversal of form. Hewitt rode with his etirrup-irons a couple of holes lower down than he did in the Cup, and that would allow him. to make more use of his mount, as the "crouch seat" is useless on a lazy horse. In the Cup Siege Gun ran in the middle of the field all the way, and it k possible that he met a bad passage. In addition, he walked sore after the race. In the Metropolitan Siege Gun was always handy, and when Canteen appeared to be a winner, after settling Halberdier's challenge, the Yaldhiirsfc colt came through and won comfortably in the last few strides. Canteen ran a good colt, and was nicely and patiently handled by his rider. A good finish was witnessed in the bhorts, and the winner was hard to pick 50yds from home. St. Denis won the Epsom Handicap with a good deal to spare. Starehot won the Irwell Handicap cleverly. Enna, who was well backed for the latter race, got much the woist of the start.
