The portrait on the left is that of Mrs Dempster, wife of the late George Dempster, the last Dempster of Skibo Castle, whose family owned the Castle and estate for many generations. The fact that Mr Carnegie has just offered the city of Dunedin the handsome sum of £10,000 for the purpose of erecting a free public library in Dunedin, lends additional interest to the picture.

This picture shows the temporary rudder made by Mes-ir* W Cable and Co., of Wellington, to enable the Hui"moa to come to Port Chalmers for. the repairs rendered necessary after her going ushore at Kaipara. The rudder was made out of one of the bout'- davit-, a bar of iron being strapped on to the .iend ot the davits, and built up by heavytimber to give it weight. Rudder chains were then attached, which allowed the ves=el to be? steered from the bridge. A large iron strap was al-o fi\e 1 to the stein po-t si'id baited, which" "-aye the necessary support. This ->pec silly ixt client piece of work enabled the Hinemoa to be navig ited from Wellington to Port Ch.nmers without difficulty.

Mr Knox, proprietor and licensee of the Farmers' Arms Hotel, Dunedin, has put up a record in the hotel-keeping business, having been JO years proprietor of this hotel, during which time not a single breach of the law has beon recorded against the house. Mr Knox came to Dunedin in 1862, and, after taking one trip to the Dunstan, came back, and built a stable; and then, demand arising for accommodation, he built the Farmers' Arms, which he occupies to this day.
