LAND AND WATER
The Swiss annual shooting competition took place at St. Triphom, a little .village in the canton of Vaud, near the end of July. The distances were 200, 500, and 1000 yards. The prize at each distance was won by a little boy, eight years of age, the eon of a local farmer named E. Rochat,' who was beaten himself by hie little son. The young marksman used a light carbine, and made an average of eight bulls out of a possible 10 at each distance.
A wealthy tea planter has determined to establish fox-hunting in India, and has asked Mr George B. Gordon, of Melbourne, to undertake the commission of supplying the foxes, which are to be let loose on the planter's grounds. Sunday shooting on the Blue Mountains is efcill a favourite pastime. The Otago Acclimatisation Society sef-ms (writes the Courier) to let the poaching fraternity severely alone nowadays.
L. Blood, the well-known walker, intends (say* the Lyttelton Times) to make an attempt on ,the .world's reoord for 54- miles early next month. Bie course will probably bo from Christchurrh to Leeston and back*
A Nelson telegram states that a hcx.k°y mutch was played there ou Saturday in perfect weather between. Wellington said Nelson, Ike Wellington team winning by 3 goalß to nil.
