PUBLIC WORKS ESTIMATES (From Our Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, September 16.
The following are items of general interest on the Estimates- — School for Deaf Mutes, new buildings (to cost £11,200), £7000 ; Home for Weak-minded and Epileptic Children, £1500; hospital wards for special cases at Auckland, Wellington, Christcnurch, and Dunedin, £2000 ; Sanatorium for Consumptives (on account), £6000; Hanmer additions, etc., £3000; ditto new swimming baths, £600. For contingent defence £95,000 is proposed to be voted. Last year's expenditure was £H6,376. There is an item of £2500 for a rifle range at Pelichet Bay, Dunedin. Under the heading of " Tourist Roads, etc." the following items appear on the Estimates- — Bealey Glaciers, £200 ; Mount Cook and glaciers, £303; Pukaki-Mount Cook, £274. Of the £68,727 voted for Southland roads and bridges last year only £27,196 was spent. This year there is provision for an expenditure of £51,435, on which there is a liability of £7047.
