THE LAST POST.

When shadows fall .on tented fields,

And kingly Silence reigne, To sleep the stubborn, soldier yields, Bound up in drowsy chain*. The bugles are sounded at evening — A glorious- sound. For shadows are eerie, And soldiers, when vtcary, Sleep sweet on the ground, A-dreammg of home in the evening, While the notes of the "Last Post" resound When shadows fall on tented fields,

And kingly Conflict reigns, Untamed, the stubborn soldier wields The sword that Freedom claims. Lo, the bugles are sounded at evening ; Yet, tho* 'tis a glorious sound,— And shadows are eerie, And soldiers, when weary, Sleep sweet on the ground,— 'Tie lonesome at home in the evening, "When the notes ol the "Last Poet ' resound, — J. Maclennan.
