NOTES BY FULL-BACK.

The gate receipt* from the CanteTburyOtago match, played at Lancaster Park >ast Saturday, amounted to £154. Mr H. Harris, the treasurer of the Otago Rugby Union, has been appointed referee in the match Southland v. Canterbury, to take place in Christelmrch on Saturday next. Owing to pressure of business, Duncan., the Otago representative, will be unable to take part in the North v. South Island match to be- played in Wellington on Saturday, September 13. Among the troopers who returned to Auckland by the Montrose last week was the well-known footballer "Buff" Caradus, who has been in South Africa with the Tenth Contingent.

During the match in Christchurch last Saturday against Canterbury, Duncan had a bone in his nose broken. The injury was so painful and bled so profusely that the Otago captain sought the aid of Dr Thacker, ■who dressed it, and set the bone in. place again.

Pan O'Brien, e\-Otago and Wellington representative, who left New Zealand with tho Kighth Contingent, returned to the colony by thp Orient, and was for some little time a patient in th« Wellington Hospital. Hp ha* now recovered sufficiently to leave for his home on the Weat Coast, where he intend* turning his attention to mining.

Ben Bain, tho speedy Southland threequarter back who broke his arm in. a recent club match in Invercargill, was a notable absentee from the Southland rep. team which defeated Otago. Bain would have been included in tho Southland thrce-quar ter line had he not met with thf accident referred to. It was some consolation to the Southlander to be able to accompany the team on its northern tour and \iew the matches from the <ouchline.

The result of the Canterbury-Otago match is known to most people, but it in not so generally known that this province, did not get a run for the other tno points that were to be obtained if the try had been converted, owing to some misunderstanding between the kicker and the placer. The try was scored midway between the corner flag and the goal post The ball wa# taken out and placed for Roddick, who is, when it is his day. -equal to kirkiaig goals from much more awkward positions, but the Alhambra player was caught between two minds, and probably recened too much advice from the other members of the team, for, after hesitating for a second or two, he ran up to the ball, but put no forte into his kick, with the result that not only did it fail to lise but a few feet off the ground, but it fell short.

There is little interest being taken by footballers in tho South Island over the inter-island content, set down for conclusion at Wellington on September 13. Several players who hate claims for inter-island honours have already been on tour and cannot spare tbe time to make another trip, so that probably a sc-ratch team or.ly will represent the South Inland. Only one inter island match has been played, and was won by the North, by 16 points to 3. There aro few men playing to-day who took part in that match on Athletic Park. Wellington, on Juno 26. 1897. H<.-re are the teams: — North Ibland : Laws. Allen, Roberts. Smith, Bayly (captain), Humphries, Mill«. M'Kcnzie, Blair, Hancock, Pauling, C'alnan, Wilson, Hardcaetlo, and Murray. South Inland : Benjamin, Orchard. Woods Armit, Duuc\n (captain), Otei me, M"L-\i-->i>. Johustone. Ham*, Fanning-. P.iluL'-i-. fcmitlj, Siowait, Rhodes, ami Pnesi

Shortly after tho commencement of the Otago-G'anterbury match Ormandy, who was playing five-eighths for the red-and-black team, recei\ed a nasty knock on the eye, which dazed him to such an extent that his subsequent play was greatly inteifcred with. This player was blamed for not pa==ing the ball out to his backs, but the knock so affected him that all he appeared to be ab]e to do was to punt the ball into touch. Oliphant, the well-known New Zealand representative, has doc:dcd to retire from the football arena, and by his retirement the game will 10-o a sturdy exponent. He has a record to his credit of which he may ,justly be proud. Ho played his first senior game in tho llmutwaiu as far ba^k as 1882, and graduated from there to Wellington, where he joined the redoTibtable Poneke Club. During the 1892 and 1893 soa«ons he was chosen in tho union's ropi es^ntative team, and in the latter season played in the New Zealand team against New South Wale^. He was then transferred to Auckland, where ho continued to make hi= mark as one of the best wing forward*, the colony has seen, being chosen to play in the North v. South Island match. In all his football career Oliphant had never met with a single accident till the one which laid him out during tho Canterbury mate); — truly a record worthy of the player. \ Wellington telegram states that Chri&t'f= and Wellington College Old Boys played their annual football match there yesterday. The Wellington players were mudi better than their opponents, winning by 16 to 3, after having had the best of the game all through. Flower, who was the backbone of the Christchurch Old Boys, scored a try. Wigley, Ollivier, and Bluuden aho played well, but the forward 5 ; generally lacked any approach to combination.

OTAGO RUGBY FOOTBALL UNION

The weekly committee meeting, held on Monday, was attended by Messrs Hutchison (president), Macdonakl, Hanlou, Campbell, Ro»s, Harris, Munro, and Smith.

A letter was received from the Lawrence Star Club asking if the committee would 'allow anything towards the expense of sending a team to take part in the seven a-side tournament. — It was decided that The request could not be granted. The application of the Dunedin Club to have remitted the finp imposed on their third-grade team for defaulting in the Zingari third-grade team was refused. The president of the Otago Rowing Association wrote asking the committee if they could set aside a day for the purpose of holding a match in aid of the funds of the association. — It was decided that owing to all the dates being taken up this season the committee could not grant -the request, but would favourably consider the matter if brought before them next season.
