A DARING ROBBERY.

A daring case of breaking and entering was repotted to the police on Wednesday evening. Messrs Wilkinson ■ and Son's branch chemist shop in George street having been ent<?red on Wednesday afternoon and ransacked. It seems that Mr Harold Grocott. who is in charge of the establishment, had closed tb^ premises,, it being the Wednesday halfholiday, and had left about 3.30, the place being then securely locked up. Upon returning at 6 15 he saw at once upon entering the shop that someone had entered during his absence, as the whole place seemed to have been ransacked in the search for spoil. The rill had been tampered with, and upon examination Mr Grocott found that a sum of money wa3 missing, but he could not then say how much, and probably as?o pome fancy goods had disappeared. Mr Grocott resides in the upstairs portion of the establishment, and upon proceeding with hii examination of the building found the Bsme state of tliiues in bis rooms, the robber or robbers fiavjng e\idenily been bfnt on a thorough search. In all jewellery to the vulue of £10 10s had been taken fiom Mr Grocott's apartments. Kntrance was undoubtedly effe-cted by means of the back door, the bolt having been broken. The time of the robbery was well planned, a 6 Wednesday afternoon is the only time at which the premises wye left unprotected, and the thief or thievos must have bargained on an Lour or two without interruption, as evidenced by the thorough manner in which the shop hai been searched. The police were at once commnnic.it.-d with, and are now investigating the aff.ur.
