EXROSURB AND ITS RENALTY< LET THIS STORY MAKE YOU CAREFUL.

The Case of Mr. H. KcCABTHY.

(By a Dutuuiu Reporter.)

It is quite a common thing for footballers to start and finish a match with rain coming down in torrents. Rowing Jien likewise, in their armless jerseys md fine linen pants, are frequently exposed to drenching rains and cold bleak .vinds, but the honour and glory attaohsd to piacing so much daylight between hemselves and their opponents at the winning post quite outweigh any coniderations respecting the risk they run v injuring their health. As a rule, ithletes have more pluck than prudence n these matters, a fact which is often jrought under their notice in after life iy such unwelcome visitors as those >hich paid Mr. Michael McCarthy so nuch attention. Mr. McCarthy resides .b-No. 5 Orton Cottages, a terrace of ,ous&3 • _ .ng off Great King-street, OunofJ ~ . was here that the above-

In newer to a question, Mr. McCarthy did 1 "■■ My troubles (started two years go or thereabout? . 1 have done a lot r work in the country in my t|me, and a I usually took contracts for work I < r a« naturally anxious to get through it 3 scon, as possible. Consequently 1 was :'ten employed outside when I should aye been inside out of the rain. .Like lost young feilowi | wag a bit careless bouts my health. I did not feel any -nmedijkte effects from these soaking*, rid I began :__ "hink myself a physical iionomenoi: v, -tit continual exposure ~> oil sort* c, * eather got me down at -st. The vigorous wpirit with which I £04. to trorjf gradually began to wane, a<J I used to lie in bed much longer in SlO morning* than I ought to bare qne. Hie tfnth of the matter v that had no inclination to work. I used to Ay fttray from it one day and then irh np and do a little the next, but rent/dally I got so miserably worn out lat I gave np work altogether. Violent tc of romiting attacked me early every oraing, whilst I had frequent micoritioxu at night. The act of urinating a» extremely difficult, the general inaatioim ■flowing that my kidneys were seased rery bxdly. My chest became iit« *ore through a dreadful dry cough hich-cam« on at frequent intervals, a -eat amount of phlegm also being spat pL My Inngs were fairly clogged up ith cold, a circumstance' which adersely affected my respiratory organs, eyond the symptoms I hare mentioned do not remember suffering any other Iments f -i week or two." "What A , happened then, Mr. cCartiiy r " I was then prostrated with acute tins in my back, which were so torenting that I could neither sit nor and up straight. When I wanted to alk anywhere I had to go along doubl1 up like ah old man. But 1 could gver proceed very far without being crfoctly exhausted, when I had y stand and gasp for breath. 'errible darting pains used to uddenly seize me in the knees, and own I dropped as though I had been hot. My head used to ache so intenee7 that I could not bear the least noise, esides feeling awfully bad-tempered ad cross without knowing why. I was Ttceedingly restless in bed owing to the hocktne: pains which never ceased for

mom^- '. Sleep I could not, in spite }f ihp ' ];at I was drowsy and listless xll 0- od did not seem to tasfee ike it ' ! to. probably on account of •ny tun;- 1 c being so unclean. I very =eldom ate anything, yet when I did I h.acl to vomit it all up again shortly afterwards. In the pit of my stomach there was a sense of weight and oppression aa though a lump of clay was stationed there. On three or four pccasions I fell asleep for a litt'e while, a.nd each time I had the -"--t ugly dreams you could conceive Such a number of horrible ideas wen. through

I looked at the clock on awaking I could scarcely believe I had only been sleeping about an hour. Right up between my shoulders I felt similar agonies to those situated in my back. .another thing I must not forget to tell you : By some means, my heart became affected. Spasms of wind used to shoot up in thai direction and cause my heart to go thumping against my ribs till I really thought I was going to pass out pf existence. My face lost all the freshness it had attained through living in the bush so many years. Black linos formed under my eyes, and my skin was of a yellowish colour. I could not bear to look at anything two minutes together, as it only had the effect of dazzling my eyes. A drumming sensation in my ears greatly affected my hearing, which many people will re- : member through getting annoyed at having to repeat thing 3 several times before they could make me coniare- - hend."

"Did you receive any medical attention?"

" Any amount of it, yeb for .all tho benefit I derived from doctors' treatment I might have done without their services. I was in such a wretched state of collapse that at last I was taken to the hospital. The doctors did not seem to know what was the matter with me, for although they prescribed one medicine after another my health, did not improve. After staying in tha. hospital three months I wa« discharged, the doctors saying they could do no» thing for me beyond what they had already done, and that amounted to no* thing. I had barely sufficient strength to walk from the institution, and on my 1 way home I nearly fainted several titties. This was the only exertion X had had for three months, and I soon discovered that my nervous system wa? broken down. After so many failures I thought it was only a matter of a little time when my internal diseases would terminate my sorrowful existence. The sooner death came the bettor, I thought." '' Do you hold that opinion now ?" t /" No fear. IVant to live as long as I ! can, because I feel that my physical ailments are permanently cured. After . the doctors gave me up I was practically brought from death' to life- by Clements Tonic. I happened to make the acquaintance of several people who "had suffered like myself, and they told me Clements Tonic had cured them. 'It will do the same for you,' was their encouraging remark, and, upon my word they spoke the. truth. I started taking - Clements Tonic with a feeling almost amounting to prejudice, but before many days were over my doubts were scattered, for my pains were slowlj diminishing, and I secured a fair amount of sleep nightly. When the strengthening qualities of Clements Tonic began to tell on my shattered constitution J was soon able to stand np straight, and my knees were never again rendered useless by sudden attacks of paralising agony. No; Clements Tonic wiped them all out. I ate heartily, without any painful conaequencea. My head was clear, and I felt as fre6h and vigorous as though I had never been ill. Cle». ments Tonic mode a sound man of m©, I hope others may see these factSj whicJi yon can publish fn any way."
