When the soft stillness of the eve is by, And Wistful shadows mourn the dying day, As round each ghostly form they silent play, When £oft~is heard the night v.ind's whispering sigh, And the gaunt hilltops ki=s the fading sky A last good-night before it pass away, Then to our hearts strange gladness steals its way — We feel the calm that is -when Ood is nighj And as, 'mid cloistered walls, some sainted choir, With mounting melody, their anthem raise, So in our hearts there mounts the wondrous fire Of mutual love, that ill base thought o\it■weighs— A perfect charity, a pure desire Tkat, loved and loving, we may spend our daya. t-G.
