Coming events cast their shadows before, and already the shadow of the New Zealand Cup meeting looms largely upon us. Tlie nominations received for the Stewards' Handicap, Canterbury Cup, and Jubilee Cup must- be considered highly gratifying both in point of quality and numbers. The nominations received for the latter race last year numbered 29, and this year's race has closed with 31. For tho Stewards' Handicap, last year the nomiuaUous sent in numbered 45, and thi» year they totaJ 57. Tho Canterbury Cup closed last year with, 16 nomination*, ana this year's list shows an increase of five on that number. Those who have been supposting Siege Uun for the New Zealand Cup will be pleaded to see . the. colt figuring amongst the Canterbury Cup nomination*,, m tlie entry suggest* staying power, and i* generally taken as a good omen. The Yaldhurst stable has also two other representatives in the same race in Evelyn Wood (Hotchkiss— St. Evelyn) and Cruciform. Pampero also figures amongst the Canterbury Cup horses, and alao claims engagement in the Stewards' Handicap -and Jubilee Cup. Vladimir, the Hon. G. M*Lean's Derby colt, has also been entered for the* Canterbury and Jubile© Cups and Stewards' Handicap. Canteen claims a liability in the Stewards' and Jubilee Cup Handicaps, but is missing from the Canterbury Cup list of entries. Nonctte. Tortulla, St. Michael, Glenaladale, and Porirua are horses who have some good performances to their credit, and it must be said that some excellent cattle hays. been entered for the race. Blazer's owner has not bean daunted by the gelding's display in the Winter Cup, and' Be has onre more entereu him over a. mile journey in the Jubilee Cup.
