August 20. — On Saturday, 0-th, our usually
quiet corner of the globt was en fete.

= isted of hoisting the Union Jack in front of the post office at 3 p.m. by the children amid the lusty cheers erf the people, and a sjjvo of dynamite discharges ot the beach Tlie d<?y being bitterly cold, a retreat was made to the Public Hall, and games of all kinds were Indulged in, tc the huge- delight of the yr.ungst?rs, and a!?o the evident satisfaction of the-* grown-up "chi.dren " After singing the National Anthem (copies of the new version taken from the Otago Witness boirg uivaluabieK renes'-imenta >n abundance were handed round, and the fiist pirt of the proceedings terminated at 5 o'clock. In the evening a most enjoyable time was spent in tlie hall, which wis beautifully decorated with °vorireen«, and most tastefully-acranged festoons oi flowers, with dirgonal chains of various shades, the red, white, aaid blue being most prominent. Peeping through tha dark fohpge were numerous Chinese lanterns, the subdued light of which were an added charm. A most ar-tistically-made crown, resting upon a purple cushio.i, hung midway f»-oni the ceiling, a».d with an excellent specimen of t'.io Union Jack (locaily made) as a background, completed a picture most enjoyable to behold, and highly creditable to the fair deaigneis. The event will 'ong be remembered by everyone present, but more especially by the children, some of whom, born in these salubrious wilds, have nevor seen a bicycle, a Tailway train, or a horse, and in dsys to coma may look back with interest upon the c owning of King Edwaid VII and their birthplace when the latter may be abandoned by all mankind, or it may be one of our mo.-t important mining and fishing ceiu.es.
