Chess Match. OTAGO v. NASEBY.

A chess match by telegTaph between representatives selected from the Naseby and Ota^o Chess Clubs took place on the evening of Saturday, the 16th inst. TLe names of the players on each side were — Otago. Naseby. J. Edwards V. Moss D. Foisyth Dr Church J. H. F." namel J. Malcolm O. Balk G. P. Howell Mr J. L. Flint umpired for Naseby in Dunedin, and Mr J. M. Lightfoot filled a similar office for Otago at Naseby, while Mr W. H. Pascoe acted as scrutineer. The rooms of the Otago Club were filled with visitors, who took a lively interest in the proceeding^ throughout the progress of the match. The contest came to a conclusion at a late hour, and ended in a victory for the Otago players, who won in every instance. A hearty vote of thanks accorded the telegraph operators — Messrs J. Crow, F. H. Barnard, and W. M'LaTen — for their expedition in sending the messages through terminated the proceedings. The following is a resume of the play- — Edwards v. Moss ((Potroffs Defence).— Mr Mos3 sacrificed a piece at the twenty-first move for an attack, but the sacrifice proved unsound, and he subsequently resigned. Forsyth v. Churoh (French Defence).— Mr Forsyth brought off a very cheery bit of play, and eventually secured another win for Otago. Hamel v. Malcolm (Irregular Opening).— Mr Malcolm lost a piece on the sixth move, and was forced to resign on the eighteenth. Balk v. Howell (Peiroff's Defence).— This proved the toughest gama of the evening, Mr Howell making a great fight. Towards the end Mr Howell found himßelf with a piece down and gradually succumbed to his oj-ponent's attack.
