SOUTHLAND LAND BOARD.
The ordinary meeting, held on Thursday, August '14, was attended by Messrs John Hay (chief commissioner), A. Kinross. J. M'lntyre, D. King, and A. Baldey.
The Department notified that tho Minister has approved oi the board's recommendation to temporarily reserve section. la, Gleoiuim Settlement, for a bush reserve for tho use of settlers. — Received.
It wa3 resolved that the Government be recommended to reserve sections 26 and 39 as well as sections 25 and 38, Clifden township, for the use of the Stock Department.
The Department intimated that the Minister ha 3 approved of the reduction, of the valuation for improvements to section 21, block VII, Waika-wa, from £40 to £30, and the reoffering of the section. — To be re-advertised accordingly. The Southland County Council notified its •willingness to accept the board's authority for the erection of a wire cable and chair across the Mataura River, opposite J. D Shepherd's land, provided the board indemnify the counoil against any claims arising through accident. — To be informed that the board cannot accept such responsibility. The Bluff Harbour Board forwarded a notice from the Stock Department to destroy rabbits on Run No. 8, Taringatui a.— To be informed that the Land Board will request tho Stock Department to poison and charge the Harbour Board with the cost, the land being private land. R. Grimwood withdrew his application for license to cut flax on islands in Oreti River, between Dipton and Lumsden. — ReceivedIn regard to application for Settlers' Bush reserve at Spar Bush, oa sawmill area No. 4"01, the N. Z. Pine Company wrote stating that it will be some months before the area is cut out.— Petitioners to be informed that the board cannot grant their request as the bush applied for is held under sawmill license by the Pine Company. R. Tillard was granted exemption from payment of rent on section li x black IX, Wai-
kßwa, on account of having no load to his section. It was resolved that the Government be recommended to grant rebate of one year's rent to D. J. Heenan, holder of section 7, block XXIX, Wairaki, on account of loss of 6tock. M. Mouat applied for renewal of temporary pastoral license over run No. 518, Mcnowai and Lillburn districts, and also lequestcd that the land be burdened with valuation should he be called upon to fence. — Granted.
G. Froggatt requested that section 5, block XLIV, Invercargill, be offered for sale. — To he> offered at upset of £50, temporary leservation to lft withdrawn.
It was resolved that section 22, block TV, and sections 24 and 34, block VI, Otara, be revalued.
W. P. Smith was granted grazing license over eight acres out of section 97, block 11, Longwood, at £2 per annum, subject to all mining rights. James King wrote stating that settlers at Merrivale desire a road between sections 10 and 11 for access to the dairy factory.—Commissioner to deal with the matter.
E. W. Brooke applied for permission to cut flax on p.r No 420, Campbelltcwn Hundred.— Granted at £1 per annum and license fee.
The following applications for grazing licenses were dealt with: — Thos. M'Cartney, over sections in blocks 11, 111, and IV, Longridge Village.— Tenders to bo invited for temporary grazing right from year to year, without aay right of compensation. G«o. Mackie, over sawmill area 353, block VI, Paterson. — Granted. A. Currie, over open land adjoining section 192, Forest Hill Hundred.— Granted. H. Dimant, over section 1, block I, Winton township.— Held over until the Winton Borough Council is communicated with. H. Ravenscroft, for lease for a term of years over sections 9 and 10, Hodgkinson township — Granted, provided the present lessee does not desire to hold the sections.
Tho following applications for land were granted . — C. R. Graves, section 152, block I, Paterson ; R. Foulkes, section 24, block VIII, Winton Hundred ; Mary J. Condon, section 1, block V, Flint's Bush township; E. Condon, jun., sections 2 and 3, block V, Flint's Bush township, and Chas. Collett, sectiona 81 to 85, block 1, Oteramika.
The following wore granted under the Mining Districts L.O. Act:— Elizabeth Westbrook, 100 acres m block XVII, Jacob's River Hundred, and Elizabeth Taylor, 30 acres in block 1, Longwood. Titles were approved as follows- — J. B. Wilson, sections 120 and 404 a, Hokonui , and Wm. Robertson, -section 13, block VII, Waikswa.
The following transfers were approved : — Sections 108 and 109, block XXIII, Invercargill Hundred, from W. H. Jenks to Sophia Everett; section 8, block XVI, Longwood, from George Buchanan to M. O'Connell ; right to remove guano, Preservation and Chalky Inlets — H. M'Kenzie to E. A. Cameron (half interest).
It was decided to inform, J. Kynaston and N. M'Naughton that tho transfer of section 15, block VIII, Waiau, could not be allowed unless the arrears of rent were paid.
The receiver was authorised to pay over thirds and fourths to the Southland County Council, amounting to £142 3s lOd, accrued to 30th April, 1902, and to the Stewart Island County Council, £1 7s Bd, for same period. It was decided that a special meeting of the board be held relative to tho revision, of the Land Guide and revaluation of all such lands as the board may deem it advisable to recommend the Minister to re-offer at a reduced rate, with a view to encouraging the selection of waste lands of the Crown.
Messrs MJlntyro and Baldey reported inspection and re-valuation of unsold sections in the town of Riverton, and recommended thai thote in blocks IX and X be offered at £5 per section, and tho3e in blocks. XIII, XV, XVIII, XIX, XXI, XXII, to XXV, at £1 5s. — Report adopted and town land priced at £20 per acre and suburban at £5, the whole to be offered at auction. The balance of the business was dealt with in committee, and the board adjourned.
