A TRAMWAY ACCIDENT. AUCKLAND, August 16.
4.n occurrence of an exciting nature occurred in Wollesley street last e\emng, which resulted in the wrecking of a tramcar, and the conductor (a young man John Davit.) receiving injuries which necessitated the amputation of the toes of his right foot. The brakes failed to grip the wheeis sufficiently, and the speed of the car was accelerated greatly to the bottom of the hill. The conductor and driver threw facka and gear on the track, in the hope of stopping the car, but this was useless. On, reaching Queen street the car jumped from tho track, and landed against a steel centre pole of the electric tramway caTctiit. Ohe pole crashed between the horses, breaking, the hind legu of one of them, and tho anisna* had to be destroyed. The pole penetrated the car a couple of feet, pinning Davis ta the front wall. Ther driver escaped unhurtr, beyond a bruiaed knee and slight injury to the toes. The few passengers m tlws ear jumped out and escaped injury, with the exception of one man, who got a. severe bruising. The front plates ol the * twisted like paper, and a couple of seats and windows were broken.
