WAITATI.
August 18.— As a rule August is a rainy month with us, and after our mild winter we fully expected that oui spring wou'd be wet. As yet, however, except for the downpour of rain" and sleet i>n Coronation Day, it has been fine .and warm. Let liS hope that this presages tite weather for gome time to come. Obituary.— During the past fortnight two of o-.it old residents have passed away. On Thursday, 14th inst., Mr M'Kay, who resided in Upper Waitati, was buried, ar.d on. the following day tho funeral of Mr Henry Clark took place. The death of Mr Clark was the result of an accident. He had climbed a trw and, while sawing off a branch, fell. The I/ranch if ell upon him, and though hia wife was nenr at the time, being feeble, she could render him but little assistance. When, help ni rived he was dead. Much sympathy with the bereaved is felt in the district.
Ping-Pong. — On the sth inst. a ping-pong tournament was held in the Good Templars' Hi.il. There was a good attendance, and the entries numbered 21. Good play vras shown by Niss Currie (West Coast), Miss N. Co!ehau, and Miss Havward, and by Messrs Scott, Annan, and Hcvvde.i. Amended are the full scores . —

The Whangarei County Council require an engineer, and in this issuo they invite applications for the position. The salary i 3 JE2OO per j ear, with 2J per cent, extra on all works compitted, the commission not to exceed £100 in any ono >ear.
