NEVIS.

August 10. — We have had two %ice falls of si:ow since the praaent month began— one on the Is!, and the other on the 9th. The latter one put a bit ol a damper on our Coronation lfcstivities, but in spite of snow, frost, and ■wind, our Coronation Committee carried through theiT programme. The flags were flying from the school, the post office, and the township. Mr C Scott drove the school children down in his waggon to the schoolhouse, where the flag was duiy hokteci; After this the children were taken to the township, where a good spread was piovided for all and sundry by Mrs Elliot. A game of football and various .minor items were put through, and if anything was omitted from the list of the projected programme the clerk of the weathei must bear thp blame.

Health Notes — A mild type of British cholera ii a> been going th 3 round this last fortnight. Most of our juveniles an-d several of the older inhabitants have been prostrated with it, and it does not yet seem to have left us.

School. — I am very pleased to report that cur school has ones again opened, tinder the teachership of Mrs P. Thomas, and it is quite like old times again to see the little ones trooping to school with their satchels over their shoulders and their merry prattle and jamty-gkip.

Mining. — There are a few of our wandering boys trying back again to the shovel and the winch, and I suppose by this time next -week a beginning v/ili be made at dredging.

Stock.— The winter of 1902 will be long remembered as one of the safest years ior stock among the .mountains. I have never known a year so frcs from bad storms. Stock of every kind have kept Almost their summer condition, and though we have had Bortre very hard, frosty nights, even these have been in short supply.

DKXDGING

The Crewe Company have not yet commenced to shift the Crewe No. 2 dredge to ths Upper Nevis. I hear they have engaged Mr Gordon, of the firm of Ivnewstubb Bros., to take her to P>cg<*»» ai-d re-erect her.

1 have not heard who is to be the new manpger of the New Nevis, but I notice Mr Watson is getting everything leady for a start.

No. 2 Ngapara. is putting everything into ship-shape for a mo^e

Nothing is being done so far as J have heard with the Remarkables yet in the way of shifting, but I suppose p.s soon as the roads clear a bit a move will be made.
