A GOVERNMENT DEFEAT.

LONDON, July 30.

The election for Lecdb- North, caused through the l?ight Hon. W. L. Jackson (C) being raised to the peerage, resulted in the return of Mr Rowland Barran (L) by 7539 votes. Sir Arthur Lawson (U) polled 6781. The figures produced a great sensation in Parliament. The defeat of the Government candidate is mainly attributed to the Education Bill and the inadequate public control of schools, also forcing it by all-night sittings. Electioneering placards contrasted! the big Liberal with the little Protectionist loaf, although the price of bread) is practically unaffected by the recent corn duties. [At the general election, the polling was:', W. L. Jackson (C), 7512; J. C. Hamilton (L.), 4885.]
