August 4 — As predicted, our rivers and cieeks ro3e to an alarming extent owing to a warm rain setting in on Thursday evening, and continuing to fall constantly for 24 hours. On Saturday the streams were turned into lakes of overflowing water as far as the eye could ccc, and in many places covering the railway lines to a depth of several feet, but with the exception of, in a few instances, a few hours' delay no serious loss so far is recorded. After the storm comes a cs-lrn. and it is now (Satuiday and Sunday) ideal tpring weather. L.M.I. Society. — According to the syllabus the programme for the evening of Tuesday, 29th, was entirely left in the hands of the lady members of the society, and their efforts- to entertain their fellow members and friends exceeded anythi?!g of the kind on former occasions. Mrs Lymbuui, one of the vice-presidents, occupied the chair. The programme consisted of music, .songs, readings, and recitations, aud a very amusing dialogue depicting the troubles experienced in procuring domestic assistance. Each lady did her part admirably, aud the affair vas much enjoyed by the audience, particularly so the representation of the two young ladies vho personated the land of the Shamrock and the heath respectively. Th" proceedings were got through \uthout a hitch, and with great credit to the lady members who cendact these iow very popular evening parties. The ability of the visitor", licwev-r, need not be gauged by the disparity in ibe figures q\ioted. They aie a smart lot of youne; fellows, and played a nice friendly game, but experienced what may be termpd a bit of hard luck.
