MELBOURNE, July 29.
Mr Deakin, referring to the Imperial Conference, said that it was clear that the idea of Australia gradually building up her own navy received very little sympatny frc n the British authorities. The Imperial proposal was practically to the effect that tne Home Government were prepared to place any and every class of warship in Australia if Australia were prepared to pay the cost of maintenance.

For the issue of £100,000 .3£- per -cent, credit foncier bonds by the Savings Bank the public applied for £94,000 worth. The balance was subsequently taken au an average price of £99 10s Ikl. In the Federal House Mr Kingston, replying to a question, said Norfolk Island was not in the Commonwealth, but was simply under the administration of New South Wale--. He could not admit goods from the island free. The Government, however, was considering the position. Nothing could be done nthout legislation.

The business hitherto conducted by tho Pacific Islands Company has been: purchased by Lever Brother*. Mr W. H. Lever, of Port Sunlight, and Mr Aruudel, of the Pacific Islands Companj 7 ", are now on their way from Home in connection with the matter.

August 4. A case of plague was discovered in the city to-day. THURSDAY ISLAND, July 29.
The captain and crew of the barque Krimpen ad Lek have arrived. The vessel was totally wrecked on Thursday on Ellangowan Rock, at the entrance to the Fly River, New Guinea. She was bound Hrom Newcastle tp Java with 1600 tons of coal.
