ANOTHER RAILWAY ACCIDENT.

AX EXGIXE DERAILED AT THE CATTLE YARDS.

Accidents on the Otago railways have been unpleasantly numerous of late, and the travelling public its becoming rather concerned over their frequency. Another accident has to be chronicled, and fortunately the resultant damage is but small, and there was no danger to human life. This time an engine and tender were derailed, and! some two hours were occupied in replacing the heavy vehicles on the line, thus blocking traffic for that time. It seems that the goods train from Mosgie-1 which should! reach town at 9.55 p.m. was either moving into the Cattle Yards Station on the 22nd 1 , or engaged in shunting operations, when the engine and tender left the rails at the south, points of the main line. The stationmaater at the Cattle Yards immediately telegraphed to the traffic office in Dunedin, and a breakdown train and gang was despatched! immediately. The engine was lifted by means of powerful jacks and gradually pulled into position, but in the meantime the passengers by trains to and from Mos- 1 giel had to be transferred across the block> and the traffic was thus disorganised for some time. The permanent way was naturally somewhat torn up and damaged, but this was made good in a short time, and the train brought on to town. It is not easy to( say how the accident occurred. The engine) may have jumped the points, or the points may have been faulty. Doubtless there will be the usual official inquiry, although them is not much satisfaction to the publio ia that somewhat unsatinfactory course.
