THE CONTRACT NOT YET SIGNED
(Feou Oue Own Cohresponbint.)
WELLINGTON, July 22.
In the House to-night questions were asked about ihe direct s4eam service to be established between New Zealand and South Africa. Sir J. G. Ward replied that two tenders had been received for the service, and the Government hud decided to accept that of Mr Sleigh, who offered four 13-knot steamers, providing, a monthly service. — Mr Massey: Is it a direct service? — Sir J. G. Ward : No, it is not. The steamers have tho right to call at two Australian ports' if they do not fill up here. There is to he accommodation for saloon and, I think, tor second class passengers as well. We directed the Agent-general to close for that service in February or March last, and negotiations have been going on bstween the solicitors of the colony and the company in regard to the contract. The contract, however, was not signed the day before yesterday, and I am vory doubtful still about the 6erviee being accomplished. I hope it will be, because it will be a very good thing for the colony. — Mr Massey: Will you give the House an opportunity of expressing an opinion on the question before the contract is signed? — Sir .T. G. Ward : If the contract is signed by the contractor, it is definite and final. We want to get it signed if we can, but I am doubtful if it will be.
