Best Articles of Food. — Moderation in eating must ever be of great value as an agent for retarding the advent of senile oecay (says the "Family Doctor"). Large epters more rapidly bring on ossific deposits by taking in more than is utilised or excreted, naturally resulting in blockading the vessels, and destroying their normal functions. According tc tlie best authorities, the following are the best articles of lood as containing the least of earthy salts : Fruit, fish, poultry, and young mutton or beef, because of their being less nitrogenous. Diseases of the Hair. — That diseases are s.ometimes communicated by hairdressers is beyond all doubt. This matter is of more concern to n.en than women, as the latter do not visit the hairdiesser so frequently, and when they do, the majority take thenown combs and brushes. In Paris and in New York, the sanitory authorities are advising the adoption of antiseptic principles, such as sterilising scissors and metallic combs by passing them through a flame each time they are used. The necessity for such hygienic precautions is even greater if. as it is now believed, baldness is caused by a germ which attacks the "'roots" of the hair, and which may be easily conveyed from one head to another.
These are Ddiger (Signals. — Premature old age, according to a prominent medical man, is sadly common nowadays among overeneigetic business men and mental workers generally. He points out that the wear and tear of modern life tend to exhau.-t the nervous force, and thus bring on all the symptom^ of old age many year?-, before its mrmal period. Here are some of the signs by which this decline of vigour may be detected, and by noting which the victim may avert the threatened breakdown. First, there if» a diminished power of attention. The subject finds it difficult to concentrate his thoughts. His memory becomes defect:ve, and there :ire in some caies frequent attacks of headache. With these symptoms come a continual sense of fatigue and wenriJiess and a disinclination to take an interest in surrounding things ; a very slight cause induces pettishness and irritability ; the skin grows pallid, and the victim falls off in weight. In some cases there arc frequent attacks of vertigo. These are the danger signals, and when they become visible it is time for a man to take a rest and change, or, at least, to cease over-taxing his biain and nerves and to ''go slow."
