TO THE EDITOR
Sir, — The following poem, by Gerald Griffin, wouJd be very appropriate to sing or recite wheresoever a soldier 01 volunteer may be entertained. Therefore I should feel obl'ged by your insertion of it — I am, etc , P. M. St. Bathans, July 21. A SOLDIER' A SOLDIER TO-XIGHT IS OUR GUEST. By Geeald Griffix. Fan, fan the gay hearth and fling back the barr'd door, Strew, strew the fresh rushes a:ound on the floor, And blithe be the welcome ih even- breast, For a soldier — a soldier to-night is our guest. All honour to him who, wh'en Danger afar Had lighted for ruin his ommoue star, Left pleasure, and countiy, and kirdred behind, Ai,d sped to the shock on the wings cf the vinrt. If you value the blessings that shine at our hearth— The wife's smiling welcome, the infant's sweet mirth — W inle they charm us at eve, let in think upon those "Who have bought with their blood our domestic repose. Then share with the soldier youi hearth and your home, And warm be your greeting whene'er he shall come , Let love light a welcome in every breast, For a soldier— a soldier tc-night is our guest.
