Chess Items.
Mr John Houghton, of the Otago Chess Club, has arrived in London.
Mr F. J. Lee, the -well-known English player, left England on April 26 last for a tour in South Africa and Australia. It 19 to be hoped that Mr Lee will include New Zealand in his travels.
The telegraphic chess match between Auckland and Wellington was concluded on the evening of Saturday, the. 19th inst., in the presence of a large number of spectators at tha club rooms of the respective teams. The victory rested with the Wellington players, who scored 8 wins as against Auckland's 3.; while two garne3 -were drawn. Seven unfinished games were referred to Mr D. Foray th (Dunedin) for adjudication. The winning players for Wellington were Messrs Barnes, Brown, W. F. Barraud, ConuaW, Morton, C. L. Barraud, Collins and Oppler; and for Auckland, Messrs M'Kay, Stewart and Miles. A graceful compliment was paid the telegraph operators a 4 the conclusion of the match for their expedJtion in coping with the iarge amount of work involved. It is recognised by both aides that the adjudicator's decsions in the seven incomplete games cannot affect the result.
The Bristol Times and Mirror (England) contemplate publishing a volume entitled " The Chess Player's Compendium," by Mr William Cook. The book will be in the press next montb, provided a sufficient number of orders are received in advance from subscribers. The sale will be restricted to 500 copies at 8s 6d each.
