ST. BATHANS.

July 21.— Hard weather still prevails, and to the curling fraternity a. continuance of the same for a few days will be hailed with delight. To-day, if the weather bs propitious, no less than 50 pair o' stains will be on the ice to compete for the various trophies, and for curlers in general to enjoy the great bofispiel of the season. Naseby won the toss for position, and chose to kick off with the wind and sun at their back. Tlus was a great advantage to the visitors. Had the sun been obscured for the whole of the contest I have the conviction that the scores would have been different. Tlie home team played a rattling good game from beginning to finiah, but we must submit to fate, and acknowledge that the visitors played better. Medical.— During the part four years this neighbourhood has been ably attended to from a medical point of view by Dr Stenhouse, whose unfailing attention to the sick and disabled ha 3 been marked with success. In all seasons and at all hours he has never been known, to flinch at the call to duty. Consequently when it became known last week that the doctor was about to sever his connection with the district it was a painful surprise to many. In severing his connection here he goes to take up the practice of the late Dr Smith at Balclutha. Arrangements were fixed up with the Central Hospital Board and the local Cottage Hospital Board to the effect that three months' notice had to be given by either side to terminate an agreement entered into by the board and Dr Stenhouse. This sudden departure of the doctor puts the onus on his shoulders of finding a. substitute to fill his place to the satisfaction of the bodies mentioned. From what is to bo learned satisfactory arrangements have been made with Dr Bott, who is highly spoken of in character and profession. Dr Bott will take up the practice so successfully carried rvut by Dr Stenhouse, or at all events will be locum teuens for the coming three months.
