WAIHEMO COUNTY COUNCIL.
A meeting of the "Waihemo County Council was 'held at Palmerston on Saturday, presentMr T. Muir (chairman), and Crs D. Ross, M. J. Ismster. M. Philp, J. Stewairt, J. E. Ma.tb.eEon, J. Rosp, and V«. E. Griffin.
The Inspector reported in respect to Blue Mountain Riding that he had been repairing the old Dunstin load from Inch Valley Crossing to Frnser's homestead, but it required to be refcirned to M'Kellai's Woolshed crossing. About 400 cubic yards of metal were needed. The contractor was nialarg satisfactory progress, and as the price was roisonab'e he (the inspector) asked the coimcil to finish the roadi lip to M'Kellar's Crossing. The culvert at. Matheson'b would require attention soon, but the giound was too soft yet for any work, lni Goodwood Riding ihe district roads had been wet, and he had not called for tenders for gravel as directed, as the reads were too wet and the river had beci high. In Duuback Riding tlia rains and ho=t bid bejn very hard on tliq back country roads, especially on the road ten Golden Bar, and owing to heavy carting of coal the roada were in a bad state. The rata fionl the district ■was not sufficient to meet the demand for repairs. He had repaired the decking of Hyde bridge in Macraes Riding, and had given notice to the Mamototo County of the v ork. A little metal or gravel would impiovo tho load at Deepdell Creek.— Tho report was adopted, and it was decided to allow 200 yds more me-taJ for the old Dunstan, road to M'Kellar's Crossing. A letter was read from Mr T. Mackenzie, M.H.R., stating, in reply to the council's' letter, enclosing applications for txtrn grant for Shag River bridge at Day's Crossing, that He would! apply for the grant at once.— Received. Goldfields revenue for May, amounting to £2 16s, was reported.
Messrs Findlay and Bailey wrote on account of the Ocean Accident and G uarantee Corporation offering to accept the risk over the county's empolyees under the Workers' Compensation for Accidents Act.— The matter was left to the chairman to arrange. The Land Board forwarded, lor the council's consideration, a, petition from James E. Matheeon and thre« other holders of small grazing rims for a bridge over the Taieri River near Rock aoid Pillar railway siding, this being a point midway between Hyde and Middlemarch. bridges, which were aboui 18 miles apart. Tho petition further stated that there were certain land fund " fourths " accrued and allocated to roads through the small run-s adjoining, and ihe roads v ere in fairly passable order. The petitioners therefore asked that the Land Board might consent to the Land Fund " fourths " allocated to these road-s, and unexpended, being reallocated to the Rock and Pillar bridge. — Cr Matheson proposed that the application for reallocation should be received and consideration, deferred pending the approva.l of a request to the Government fcrr a grant for the bridge. He considered that there was urgent need for a grant from the Government, and perhaps £1000 might be obtained. — A long discussion followed on th's point, and it was ultimately resolved, on the motion of Cr Isbiater, tho Land Board should be informed that the realiocation was not approved of in the meantime by the council.
Messrs Caroliu and Co., Melbourne, wrote Lrii.ging under the council'a notice some road and drain-making machinery, referring the ccuncil to J. G. Ward and Co., agents in Invercargill, and enclosing evidence of the work done at Wanganui and other places. — The letter was referred to the inspector for report.
Upon an application from Joseph M'Lennan, it was resolved to call tenders for 12 chains of giavelhng on the Horse Flat road. P. M'Skimming and Son, Beuhar pipe works, wrote quoting prices 'for drain pipes, in reply *.o the council request. — Received. F. C. Elaon, Macraes, forwarded fill account for £1, which he considered was due on account of repairs to his trap, damaged through: the council's neglect in not keeping a portion of the roud leading to the Bonanza mine in repair. He also requested repairs to the road. — The Inspector said the damage to the brace might happen on any road, and the damage generally was not th 2 result of the state of the road, which wa3 certainly not good at present, but the frost and wet weather accounted for that. It was as much fiom bad drmng as the state of the road that the accident had resulted. — • Cr Griffin thought the council was liable, and' he moved that ihe account should be passed for payment. — The motion was not seconded. — The couiicil decided to receive the letter and repudiate any liability. It was decided on Cr J. Ross's motion that the inspector should call tenders for gravelling the worst parts of Liroe Kiln loud, the total cost not to exceed £'20 or £25.
The following tendcn for contracts were accepted — 100 yds cl stone on road near Chinese camp- Samuel Griffiths, at 5= lOd per yard; 150 yds gravelling, Shag River traffic bridge to Bushy Park— Diy Bro=., at 1& Id p^r yard. On Cr Griffin's motion, it was de< lded to call tenders for cither gravelling or nictal!ni<j opposite Mrs Ha>'s property jt Deepdell Accounts amounting to £210 16s 3d were passed r or payment.
