OTAGO EDUCATION BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the Otago Education Board, held on Wednesday afternoon, was attended by the Re\. P. B Fraser (chairman), Mes-rs D. Borrie, W. Nicolson, W. Snow, .1 Sim, J. Mitchell, R. Dr AVill and Mr O'Kane, representing the (lieon Island School Committee, waited on the board to a=k for impro\ed Famtai"y ariangementr, in connection with the school. Notice had been seized on the committee by the Borough Council to abate a nuisance in respect to tl.o drainage, and the deputation desired tho boaid to assist in the matter. On the motion of Mr Mitchell, seconded by Mr Nicolson, it was resolved — " That the deputation be informed that the board will be prepaied to join in carrying out any well-devited scheme for removing the mmauce that may be submitted by the Borough Council."' It was also decided to take kgal advice on the position of the board under the Health Act. IMPHOVEMENTS AXD HEPAIRS. The following claims for half the cost of pundry improvements and repairs to the hoard'? property were duly approved: — Clark's Flat (fencing), £4 Up; Almnri (painting lesidence, etc.), £5; Heriot (shelter sheds), £9; Lauder (draining, «tc ), £4 ss ; West Taieri (draining, asphalting, etc.), £15 ss; Wetherctones (additions to residence), £12; Tokorahi (altering galleries), £2 10s; Arthurton. (painting, etc.). £4- 10^; Oamaru South (asphalting), £12 10s; Albany street (fencing), £6. SEVERAL MATTERS. The West Taieri Committee wrote asking that the teacher bo allowed to act as clerk to the committee. — The lequest wtis declined. The Secretary to the School Committees' Conference wrote forwarding the resolution passed by them recently protecting against the small salaries paid to t-econd and fourth assistants in large schools. — On the motion of Mr Mitchell it was decided to forward a < opy of the letter to the Minister, with the board's endorsement of the opinion ex proved therein. — The Secretary remarked that tho conference had already sent the resolution to tl'O Minister. — Mr Mitchell said the board had agreed that the salaries were inadequate, but they should endorse the resolution of the conference, and &end it to the Minister The Teacher at Momona applied for leave to lease the school refcidence, and the request was grantpd. The Oamaru North Committee wrote declining any responsibility for pay incut of lepairs to the leoidencc — Received. A request from the Blacks Committee for the enlargement of the chool was referred to the insnector for report. The Secretary to the Educational Institute forwarded a retolution p-i> ,ed by that body taking exception to statements made in tho Otago Daily Tunes by Mr .7. A. (idruth (chit-f veterinarian to the Agricultural Department), Dr Truby King, and Mr (J M. Thoirnon in regard to -the teaching of science in primary -.< hool-. — Recci\ed.

THE XIAOAXDnEW RO SCHOOL
Messrs W. Somerville (chairman) and H. Henderson (representing the Macandrew Road School Committee) waited on the board to ask for improvements in the shape of repainting the interior of the school and better sanitary arrangements. The deputation said that the inside of the building bad never been repainted since it was built 18 or 19 years ago. — After a discussion it was decided to carry out a number of repairs to the school as recommended by the architect in his report.
THE CVTLIXS DISTRICT.
A deputation consisting of Messrs Ford. Hunt, Allen, Brown. Sounevss, Hewson, and Harris waited on the board in connection with the proposed school near tho dairy factory at Owaka Valle)-.
The board decided to erect a school at the dairy factory, as previously agreed upon Tho secretary was also instructed to mako arrangements to Gecure a site at Stoddart's corner, to which the Tahatika School could be removed. The architect was also instructed to report on the buildings.
ACCOUNTS,
Accounts amounting to £6762 5s lid were passed for payment.
GENERAL.
On the motion of Mr Nicoleon it was agreed to grant pound for pound subsidy towards erecting a shed for physical drill at the Hampdon District High School.
On the motion of Mr Mitchell it was resolved — "That Mr Hanna be thanked for hiri reports and his zeal in acquiring information calculated to bring physical culture in Otago up to dato, and that the lx>ard take over the books imported by him and supply one copy thereof to each school."
Mr Peattie afkex.l leave to withdraw his motion — "That the board act up a committee of inquiry to see what can be done towaids making provision for tho teaching of botany in the Training College." — Withdrawn accordingly.
THE RETIRING CHAIRMAN". The Chairman eaid lie would just like to say a few word? prior to handing over the position of chairman to his succeesor. In doing so he would thank members of the board most heartily for the kindness that had been shown him during tho year. More than he expected, ho had received the Mipport practically of every member of the. board. If he had tluw been enabled to fill the position with no discredit to himself or to the board, it was due to thp consideration ho had received at the hands of mom bers He thanked members nud the officers of the board mo«t heartily for tho attention he had received from all of them Ho was not going to make a ie>tiring speech, and would piefer hi.s j ear of service to speak for lUclf. — (Applmnp.) Mr Mitchell moved— " That the board place on tho minutes, its appreciation of the manner in which tho chairman has conducted the business during the year, and thank him for his services."
Mr W. Nicolcvon, in seconding thr motion, "aid thai, although lie had opposed the chairman's election last year, he wa3 highly pleated with the manner in which Mr Fraaer had conducted the bunness.
Mr Snow said ho considered the chairman had done remarkably well — better than ho expected —(Laughter.) He was very pleased at the manner Mr Frasor had carried out Ins dutiea, and was agreeably disappointed. —(Renewed laughter.)
The motion wa B then carried unanimously, and the board rose at 1.15 p.m.
