The Inrpe rmyort.it ions of C.il:fornian cowgras» of really yood quality aro interfering considerably with the *al? oi the 1< cal article, and have caused a slight easing in prices. Derwent potatoos hive -uffered .(■ decline, and price" now rule at 40s per ton at country stations, at which lat^ several hundred tons have changed hands during the past few da-\s. Several speculators vvtio op"ratt<l fiecly in the early part of the reason, and who assisted by so doing to unduly inflate tho market then, h<i\e brt-n endeavouring to unload during the past few day-, with the result that in u t.ii.ccs rai be quoted where they have le-feold tr heal merchants at prices which represent a !o«s on the original purchase prices of from 20s to POk per (in. This, of course, has helped to depress the local market. The ctop this year is estimated to yidd about 200,000 tons, and of this only 67,539 bags have been sl-ipped from Lytt-elton from January 1 to July,' 11, as against 140,000 bags for the corresponding period of last year. It will thus be seen; that there is an iinprejedent^dly large surplus of potatoes in the colony this year, for Which it will be difficult to find an outlet now that Australia has the l-'ederal tariff. The reports as to the Tasniania-n yield stale that this year it is estimated at 114,704 tons, and the nearest approach to this was m 1599, when the total yield was 101,070 tons. By this it would appear that Tasmania can supply the Sydney market for some considerable time to come. Althought pienty of onions are offering, merchants will oiilj buy when they ha\c orders tg»
