WETHERSTONES
Jnly U. — Two ex-members of the. Sixth Contingent — Messrs A. "Wilson and R. Mackay — left Lawrence last Thursday for Soiith Africa. A number of their friends and acquaintances met on Wednesday right to bid them goodbye. I understand they have sailed from Dunedm since. It is stated that an ex-member of the Fourth Contingent, and who is working on one of the dredges in Wetherstones at present, is likely to leave soon for the same distant region. Weather.— The rainfall for June was light. Rainfall for the first six months of the present year, 15.59 in. Last week, with the exception of one day, was generally fair, but very cold, being the coldest week all through the Bee son. The exception was the 9th (Wednesday), when there was a S.W. gale, with rough showers, a high glass (29.55), and snowing on the ranges above here. It is said that there have been snow showers nearly every day out towards Waipori. The barometer was very peculiar last week. At the beginning of the week it was high (29.74). During each night it fell a certain amount, and kept steady all the day. At present it is at 29.07, but on the rise. There wa3 heavy rain last night, which soon turned to snow, the ground being white this morning. The lowest reading of the thermometer was 3ideg. at 8 a.m. of the 13th , the highest, 56deg at noon of the 10th.
