SHAG POINT.

On Friday evening, 16th, Shag Point Hall was filled to overflowing with representatives of every house in the district, the occasion for such widespread interest being a farewell social to one of the most popular men in the place — Mr A. Gillanders, who for the past four years has" acted as underground manage! at Allandale. The Ladies' Committee (Mrs James Bcddy, convener) provided an excellent spread ■ ia an empty house belonging to the Shag Point Company, thus leaving the hall clear for dancing. Mr A. Goodley, on behalf of the male residents, presented the guest of the evening with a purse of sovereigns and a sovereign case, suit-ably inscribed. On behalf of the ladies he also presented Mrs Gillanders with a splendid travelling rug. Both Mi Goodley and Mr j Everest (who, on behalf of the Allandale ComI pany, presented Mr Gillanders with a cheque 1 for a substantial amount) referred to the many good qualities of the recipient, whose departure would leave a gap, not only in the mine, but throughout the district. Mr James Allen, iv a letter apologising for his absence, referred to Mr Gillander's ability as p. manager, and to the loss which his departure would cause to the , Allandale Coal Company. Mr Gillanders, who seemed to feel veiy keenly the severance of so many old ties, returned thanks on behalf of Mra Gillanders and himself.
