Notes from Cromwell. (From Our Own Correspondent.)

CROMWELL, May 27. The weather is cold a"d stormy, and it is I snowing all round the hills. The nver is falling slightly ail the tin.c. j Some of the ladder of the Ciomv.e'.l dredge, ' lecently silted iip, has been cut away, and I expect it will take fully a month before a start can kc iiiade. as they have to float the dredge and repair the ladder. 'ill-* Central Electric dredge has just «iait<*d woiki .jj, after waiting for coal. I believe the pr.'."-r.oLl- are looking bettei. 'J'lierp is no sign of the expert yet to advise obnu* the removal of the falls. It is hoped he ■ will come boon, as all the dredges could work p<"»ily with the present river if the obstacles ve-re removed. May 29. The weather ib fin?, and the river is "falling 6' eadily. , The Lady Ranfurly ar.d Point dOr dredges have both made ?. start again. The Junction Electric Ko. 1 dredge is losing time this week, so I anticipate there may bo a diop in the return. The Junction Electric j Xo. 2 dredge hag not started yet. ( The Rise and Shine dredge as reported to be on something pretty c,ood, but the dredge Jb losing a good deal of time. The Hartley and Riley dredgf is working steadily, but I do not think she will ha'-e much over laat week's return. The Riley's Beach dredge i= working FteacHy. The Royal Maori dredge 1= getting weli up to wkcre ene v-dl s'.wfc " 4

May 80. Tke weather is fine, and the river falling steadily. The Government expert arrived here to-day to advise as to the b"st means of removing the ob=tructiors caused by the recent waterspout, lie inipectea the i*ver, but I have not yet heard the nature cl liis advice. I'rem C'lvde. (Faoit Our Own Cohbespokdent.) CLYDE. May 29. The weather, ofter a light fall of snow, has cleaied up again. The dredges in the vicinity of Clyde are working full time. Some objectors to mining values in the Assessment Court, Clyde, lcvealed the fact that some dredging companies on the river had small prospects of success. After hearing the evidence of one objector many intending objectors left the court rather than submit to the oideal of exposing the prospects and financial position of their respective companies. Notes from Alexandra. (From Oitr Own Goebesfondent.) ALEXANDRA, May 27. The Olrig dredge was stopped last week for an overhaul, but lir.s again resumed work. The Sailorls Eend, Manuherikia, Clyde Ko. 2, and the Bendigo dredges are working steadily, and, judging by the present indications, returns fiom all these dredges should show a decided improvement on last week's yields. The Unity dredge, which has averaged 120oz jier week for four successive weeks, is still ou the metal, and it is rumoured that next Saturday's return will eclipse all previous records. The First Chance dredge broke her crown wheel, and is stopped pending the arrival of a new one. I hear phe struck good wash ju=t previous to the mishap. The river is decidedly low at prpsent, and is •still falling. We are having squally snow- j storms all day and hard frosts at night, so that it appears that the winter has set in in earnest, and there is no likelihood of a further rise in the rirer. The Perseverance, Molyneux Hydraulic, Earnscleughs, Alexandra Lead, and. in fact, all the dredges, are working steadily. The manager of the Molyneux Hydraulic expects to get good returns for some time now.
