OrAGO AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL SOCIETY.
THE ANNUAL REPORT
Hie following la the annual report of the committee ol the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society for the year ending 30th April last —
In presenting to members the twenty-fifth annual report and balance sheet your committee have pleasure in congratulating them upon the continued growth and popularity of th-i society. You will notice that the finances of the society are in a satisfactory position. During the year we have further reduced our indebtedness and carried forward a substantial credit balance. In addition to this, considerable improvements have been effected at Tahuna Park mi the wav of increased accommodation for stock, H3 well as by the erection of new pig pens. This healthy position has largely been attained by the increased interest which is being taken in the .society by farmers, as veil as by residcnt3 in' the town, and the fact that our roll of mcrubeT3 has been largely incieased during the year clearly indicates that the citizens of Dunedin, as well as those resident in the country, now realise that your society is working equally in the interests of Dunedin as ifc is endeavouring to stimulate the agricultural, pastoral, and dairying industries of the country. The Winter Bhow last year was opened by the Hon. T. Duncan, Minister of Agriculture, and on the- following day the society was honoured by a visit to the show from their Royal Highnesses the Duke- and Duchess of Cornwall and York, who carefully inspected the show, and expressed their great appreciation of the excellence of all the exhibits, which indicated ifi Ui ms the wealth stud, resources of
New Zealand. During the period of the Wintef -show, lectures on agricultural and dairying industries were held, and, judging by the large attendance of those interested at these lectures, the fact was mainfest that tho subjects being discussed wero of great importance to Ml present.
Th? annual horse parade was held at Tahuna Park ou October 3, and ihe collection of valuable horses "019 entries) was the largest yet seen in Dunedin. Your society has reason to be satisfied with tha departure it mpde this year in judging the exhibits, and in offering substantial prizes at the parade. The Summer show,' held at Tf.huna Park on the 28th and 29th November last, waa visited by his Excellency the Governor, Lady Ranfnriy and suite, Right Hon. R. J. Seddon (Premier), and Sir J. G. Ward. The day was beautifully fine, and an immense crowd of people collected on the ground during the afternoon, resulting in a record attendance. The exhibits, as a whole, were excellent, and competition throughout was most keen. The grand parade of stock was a great feature of the show, and the fine animals that passed round tho large enclosure was the admiration of all. Tho wood-chopping competition, whicli was this year added, to the programme, cause much •excitement, the competitors being frequently, applauded during their arduous work.
In the field turnip competitions the entries were more numerous than previously, and competition was moat keen, and the- judges in their report state that as a whole tils fields of turnips were very good indeed. From the audited balance ehe'-'t submitted hereto you will notice that our financial position i 3 sound and oxu assets vainuble.
Your committee wish to record their grateful thanks to the ladiei and gentlemen who have acted as judges, to tha press tor their valuable and carefully compiled reports, to the marshals and cInES stewards (who have fo energetically worked in arranging show exhibits), and to all who have- assisted n carrying out the work of your society chirm.; the tir.auoipl \ iA'c just closed.
