ARREST OF ALLEGED BURGLARS.
(From Odr Own" Coheespoxdent.) CHRISTCHURCH, May 31.
Shortly before midnight on Friday the police wero informed that the Royal George Hotel, situated on the East Town Belt, had been filtered and a quantity of jewellery stolen from the landlady's room. A ladder was found placed against the bathroom window, and it was e\ ident that an entrance liad been effected there. The landlady mit-aed her jewellery at about 11 p.m.. and it was faurmi-ed that her room was entered at about 6 p.m., while the household was at dinner. On receipt of the news the police at once set to work, and at 8 a.m. to-day two men named Thomas O'Oonnor and George M'Kay, alias Watson, -were arlested in Durham ptreet by Constables Quirke and O'Oonuell. Most of the missing jewellery was found in their possession. The two men were charged at the Magistrate's Court on Saturday morning. A remand was granted, and an application for bail was opposed by the sub-inspector, who stated that the accused were two of the most dangerous characters in Christchurch. At this point M'Kay said that he intended to plead guilty. .Bail was granted, themselves in £100 each and two sureties of £200 each.
