RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.
D.J.O. MAY MEETING. I Fiest Day — Wednesday. The day wa3 anything but enjoyable at Wingatui yesterday, ■when the Dunedin Jockey Club held the first day's racing of their May meeting. A keen and piercing wind blew from the south-west, and, owing to the recent rains, the ground was wet, making things very unpleasant underfoot for any one who ventured to stray on the grass. The attendance of the public was not large, for which fact, no doubt, the uninviting weather is responsible. The racing could not be I blamed. Good fields were promised, and good fields came forward, and from the point of view of sport everything was excellent, go that the poor attendance muet be put down to the bad weather. The course, as was expected, was very hea\y and greasy, although the wind had a tendency to <by it up a bit as the day wore on. During the day the sum of £3507 was put through the totalisator by Messrs Mason and Roberts, as against £4847 on the first day of the May meeting last year, the comparison showing the large falling-off of £1340. The various events resulted as under : — FIRST HURDLE HANDICAP, Of 70SOVS ; second horse to receive lOsovs from the stakes; over eight flights of hurdles Bft 6in high.
