THE NAPIE R ABATTOIRS.

• NAPIER, May 7. The Napier abattoirs at Awaioto were formally opened this afternoon by the -Mayor (Mr John M'Vay) in the presence of the members of the council, -the Mayor and! councillors of Hastings, Mr A. L. D. Frnser, M.H.R., Messrs Gilruth (Government veterinarian), Miller (stock inspector), Hielop (architect of the abattoirs), and a large> gathering of prominent citizens. Appropriate speeches were delivered by the Mayor, Mrr Gilruth, and Mr J. M. Coleman, and theMayor formally proclaimed the abattoirs open. Mr Hislop, as architect of the works, presented Mr M'Vay with a gold key, with an inscription engraved, as a memento or the occasion, and his Worship acknowledged the gift in suitable terms. The abattoirs cost the Napier Borough something like£ssoo, borrowed from the Government under the provisions of the act giving municipals ties power to borrow for such purpose. The buildings and appointments are of the most approved pattern, the arrangements for the cooling, killing, and inspection of stock being all that can be desired. (From Our Own Correspondent.) NAPIER, May 7. The opening of the Napier abattoirs today was one of the most successful function* ever held in Hawke's Bay, and the unanimous opinion was that the abattoirs were the most perfect in design and finish, and the model for New Zealand. At the conclusion of tho Mayor's speech the architect (Mr James Hislop, of Dunedin) was repeatedly called for, but as the latter was busily inspecting the works generally he did . not respond. The Mayor (Mr John M'Vay) spoke most enthusiastically of Mr Hislop s design of the works as being a model for the colony, both as respects •p 1 aiming and the particularly good finish of the whole work, which one and all admired. liie Mayor also said that the drainage, water supply, and ventilation were simply perfect, ?nd the council had to specially thank Mr Hirlop for the site—which they had suggested, but which Mr Hislop thoroughly approved of. Prior to the opening of the abattoirs Air Hislop presented the Mayor with a handsome golden key, after which the Mayor declared the building open.
