HAWKE'S BAY.
In the case of a young man named Shalford, committed to the Supreme Court for sentence for stealing postal notes, his counsel said it was supposed that prisoner had been led away into gambling habits. The Chief Justice said the gambling habit was one whioh, unfortunately, was not dealt with as it should be. Its evil effects were not recognised sufficiently. In many districts of the colony gambling was going on habitually, and people who ought to be leaders of society did not seem to see what the yearly sacrifice of numbers of our young men to thi9 Moloch meant.
