MR ANDREW CAMERON.
The ranks of the old and honoured «'7e» titics are rapidly thinning away. Yesterday anothar blank was created. Dunedin—* the Dunedin that 'knew him — will be' greatly grieved to hear of the death of Mr Andrew, Cameron, which took placv yesterday morning. He was born at Paisley, Jcotland, on January 20, 1823. He was a baker there, and early took deep interest in the church, and was for a n*-jnber of years previously to nis leaving for New Zealand an honoured' elder of the Abbey Close U.P. congregation. He came to Dunedin by the ship City of Dunedin on her maiden voyage, "arriving at the Port in September, 1863. Shortly^ after this he made his home in Sawyers^ Bay, and subsequently removed to Port Chalmers, where he carried on the business of a- baker and grocor until 1884, In which year he retired and removed to Dunedin. - During his stay at Port Chalmers he gave himself heartily to the building u;n, of the Presbyterian .Church there, and took a 'very [ active part in securing the erection of the present handsome building, to -which he also gave liberally of his nifanp. After removing to Dunedin he attached himself to Knox Church, to the session of ' which he was. soon appointed. Here he made -his in- . fluence felt, visiting tfcfc sick 'and aged, in. which he toot special interest. To. the mat.-, ter of the liquidation ot the debt of; £2800; he gave his undivided attention for." two,yeara and a^Jialf, and was -wonderfully sue-, cessful in this labour of' love, A^ a citizen; he will be remembered chiefly for^his! kindly, »nd cheerful disposition. He had ever, .a; cheery word for friends, and- rarely *.lef.t t them without a quiet joke. > He TieyeFtoolc. any part in the more public duties, but .was' 1 content . to reserve all his strength t. for. church- work and " his 'iamily.'-' yQtt -the . death ■ . of his wife in February, 1891, he retired-to; Anderson's -where, he. has resided sinee '. with his married daughter. Here he made for himself a place all his own.' He continued his. ministrations .to . the side, and' -many a weary soul- was brightened 1 by-hia-sympathetic words .and genial -presence. He. had a. rare-pift of humour, and a-large fund* of stories that made him the pleasantesf of companions, and many friends will' mias' the hearty <word of encouragement which he " . was sure to give. He leaves behind him ft' memory which is' a. precious possession' to ■those who .had the' happiness^ of his ac-' quaintance. -His family consist "of three' sons and one daughter, all of whom survive . him. One of his sons is.tht! .Rev. \ Andrew. Cameron, the esteemed .minister of Ander- , eon's Bay Presbyterian Church.
