RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.

SOUTHLAND AUTUMN MEETING. (Fhom Otra Own Correspondent.) First Day— Wednesday, April 16. The Southland Racing Club were extremely unfortunate in having very bad weather for the opening day of the club's Autumn meeting. Heavy rain fell throughout the morning, and seriously interfered with the attendance. After midday it cleared off, and only slight showers fell after-wards. The track was very heavy, and the enclosures were very dirty under foot. Since their last meeting the club have extended their saddling paddock and erected several additional stalls for the convenience of trainers. The totalisator house has had an addition to it, and) other minor improvements have been made to the chib's grounds. In the Hurdle Race H. Carr was badly shaken when Dormant fell with, him, and was carried in on a stretcher. The race for the Novel Handicap had a very suspicious appearance, and unless such races be made to furnish something like genuine sporfc they should be deleted from the programme. In the Visitors' Plate several investors were paid out a jE3 3s dividend, but it was afterwards corrected to £3 9s. In one or two other races the working of the totalisator failed to give satisfaction. The following are the details of the racing — HANDICAP HURDLES, Of 35sovs; second horse osovs. One mile and three-quarters. 20— Mr TV. Swales's m g Fright, by Duntroon, aged, 9.7 (H.
