The market wa=; rather quiet on Monday morning, but improved in the afternoon so far as number of sales is concerned, though there w,is a tendency to a weakeuiug m prices. This, however, ;s not exceptional, us most of the stocks impioved in anticipation of good returns, ai,d there la likely to be a decline until there are prospects of further good yields The returns for last week are very encouraging, the aggregate being higher than it has been for seme months, and as the drift settles down they should steadily improve. The height ot the river at Alexandra on Monday morning was 4ft 9m above the normal mark, and the weather continued fine. For the purpose of showing the alterations in the market during the week we make a short comparison cf some of the leading stocks. Aldiugas ha\ c been very steady, with buyers offering from 19s 9d to 20s IVI, and sellers asking from 21s I'd to 225, though there havo been no inquiries since Friday. A. sale was effected at 20s 9d on Tuesday. Alexfindia Leads have hardened, buyers moving up from 5s 3d to 5s 6d, and sellers from 6s to 6a 6d. Alpine No. 2 shares were somewhat neglected until Thursday, since which time they have come into prominence, and are still gradually iinpioving. On Wednesday buyers oSered 20s, with sellers at 245, whilf the latest quotations are 24s 3d and 23s 6d. One parcel changed hands on Friday at 23s Bendigoes have been steady, buyers offering 11s 6d and 12s, and holders wanting from 12s 9d to 13s 3d. A sale took place at 12s on Friday, but since theu there has been a total absence of buyers. On. Tuesday last Boundary Creeks were sold at ss, ■with further buyers at 4s 9d, and sellers at 6s, and on Friday there was a noticeable improvement, v sale taking plrce at 6s, while more shares were wanted at 6s 6d, sellers holding for 7s. Buyers have dropped back to 5s again, though there are no sellers in the market. Callaghan's Creeks hardened steadily last week in the expectation of a good return, but there i« a slight decline since its receipt. On Tuesday the closing quotations were 7s and 8s Gd p, and ou Saturday a sale was made at 10s 6cl p, with further buyers at 10s p, and sellers at lls p. The latest selling offer is 10s 4UI p, without any buyers. Sellers of Cromwells ha\ c- remained steady at from 58s ed to 61s, with the exception of Thursday, when a sale was effected at 52s 6d, with further sellers at 555, and Saturday, when 3hares were in tho market, at 52s 6d, but buyers have weakened. Dunstan Leads have plso fallen, buyers receding from 7b 3d to 5s 3d, and sellers from 9s 6d to 7s Gd. Electrics have not been much in favour with buyers. A sale was made on Wednesday lit 365, and during the rest of the week sellers «ibked from 37s to 395, buyers offering 36s on Tuesday. Enterprises have been steadily inquired for at 27s and 27s 6d, while holders huve asked Jrom 29s 3d to 325. Ettncks were steady, with buyers at 10s and sellers at 14s until Saturday, when the former advanced to 12s, and the latter dropped to 13s. A sale took place on Monday at 12s, and more shares were wanted at the same figure, but there were no sellers. First Chances have weakened a little. On Monday week the quotations were 8s and 9a 3d, and ou Monday one parcel was taken up at 8s 3d and two at Bs, while further buyers offered 7s 9d, with sellers at 8s 6d. Gold Kings have bean very steady, buyers offering from 6s 6d tc Gb 9d, with sellers at 63 9d and 7s. Three sales tcok place on Tuesday at 6s 9d, and one 011 Saturday at the same price. Golden Rivers have not fluctuated much. Buyers have been 111 the market at from 7s to 7s 6d, with sellers at from 7s 5d to Bs. Sales were made at 7s 6d 011 Monday week, and 7s 6d and 7s 3d 011 Tuesday, aLcl at 7s 6d on Thursday and Saturday. Junction Electrics were steady all last week, but the vendors' shares appear to have been all taken up, and the stock has made a move towards its true value. Sales were made at 20f> 6J on Monday and Tuesday, at 20s 3d and 20s on Wednesday, and at 20s 6d on Saturday, but there was a marked improvement on Monday, when four lots changed hands at 21s 3d and sit at 22s 6d, while further inquiries were made at 22s 6d, holders wanting 3d more. Leaning Rocks have been weak, but Leviathans have improved considerably. Buyers of preference shares in the latter have advanced from 5s 6d to Bs, and sellers from 6s 9d to 9s, while tha oidinary shares have undeigone a proportionate impro\ enic-nt, buyers moving from Is to 2s, aixt .spller-. from 2s to 2s 6d. A sale was made at 2«- oji Thin sday, and two more took place at the same price on Monday. On Monday week two sale= of Meg and Annies were effected at ISs 6d, with additional sellers at the same price, buyers closing at 18s but the stock weakened until Thursday, since which time it has improved .1 little. Sales took place at 18-i on Tuesday, at 16s Cd a:.d 16s 3d on Wednesday, and at 16s on Thursday. Moiite Christo-* were ofiercd at 29s lid on vlonday week, with buyers at 20a, and a sudden was noticcabfe on Wednesday, when sales were recorded at 29s &d and .'Mb, but the <-tock has fallen back since then, the latest quotations being 20a 6d and 255. The quotations foi New Halfway Houses at tho beginrurg of last week were 10s 6d and 13s but the stock impicicd until Fiidi>>,

though it is now falling again. Sales took place at 129 3d on Tuesday, at 13s and 13s 6d on Wednesday, at 14s Gd, 14s 9d, 14s 6d, 14s 9d, and 15s on Thursday, at 15s on Friday, at 13s Bd and 14s on Saturday, and at 12s 9d, 12s 6d, and 12s 3d on Monday, three parcels changing 'hands at the last-named price, while the closing quotations -were 12s and 12s 9d. Notwithstanding the enforced idleness of the Nel°on Creek dredge, the shares have hardened slightly, buyers having advanced from 63s to 61s 6d, Vvhile sellers have asked 6Ds and 70s. Xo Town Creeks have improved a good deal. Sales were effected at 23s on Monday week, at 25s on Thursday, at 25s 6d on Friday, at 25s 6d, 265, and 25s 3d on Saturday, and 27s yesterday, four lots being taken up at that figure, whi'e the closing quotations were 26s 6d and 275. Olngs have weakened, buyers receding from 23s 6d to 20q, and sellers from 25s to 21s. Sales were made p,t 22s on Thursday, and 21s on Monday.
