GORE.
J March 24. — I am pleaded to be able to state ! that our town is nw likely to lose the go-ahead name one occasionally hears applied to it — viz., " The Chicago of the South." The week before last p. vote of the ratepayers was taken on proposals to raise a losn for various improvements in the town. These included tha purchase of the electnc light works, a complete drainage scheme, new footpaths, a town clock on the new post office, etc. Separate votes were taken on each ot the proposals, and all (with the exception of tho East Gore drainage scheme) were carried with large majorities. A complete and inexpensive water scheme is now decided on, and will be carried out' very shortly. When these improvements are completed, it will be safe to say that Gore will not be far behind tho best Little town in New Zealand for healthiness, comfort, and convenience. ■ From a business point of v;e-.v it holds its own even now v.uth many of the larger towns. Great credit is due to cur energetic mayor, Mr A. A. Mac Gibbon, who has had a largo amount cf opposition in his progressive policy from a few in the town who are very much concerned about the £ s d, and who predict there will be a rise in the rates. But even should tho rates be doubled, the va'u.3 received will be well worth the extra money. The mayor has consented to offer himself as a candidate for re-election, and it is to be hoped that he will be accorded another term of office, so that he may carry through the good work he has beg\in. His opponent at the pollingbooth will be Mr D. M'Farlane, an ex-mayor of Gore, who has been requisitioned by his friend-i to agjun become a candidate for the mayoral chair. VnieJictory. — On Friday evening; last a banquet was held in Lock's Dining Rooms, under the auspices of the Mataura Mounted Rifles, as a farewell to Lieutenant J. B. Nichol, of that coips. Lieutenant Nichol is leaving Gore to carry on the practice of his profession (barrister and solicitor) in Dunedin. The chair was occupied by Captain Bowler (Mataura Mounted Rifles), who was supported by the guest of the evening, and Captain M'Nab (Munhiku Mounted Rifles), Captain Boyne and Lieutenant Domigan (Goro Rifle Volunteers). During the course of the evening Captain Bowler (on behalf of the Mataura Mounted Rifles) presented Lic-utenant Nichol with a gold sovereign case.
