THE DAMAGE IN CANTERBURY.
•SERIOUS LOSSES REPORTED. (From Our. Own Cobbespondent.)
CHRISTCHURCH, Maroh 26.
Reports still continue to come to hand of damage by the recent floods. The drainage of some hundreds of acres is slowly escaping into the rivers, and some idea can now be formed as to the damage done. A good potato crop for North Canterbury is worth £20,000, and this season was a favourable one, but it is safe to say that in the flooded area eight tons out of every 10 will not be dug out of the ground. The damage to all crops and stock has been estimated at £10,000, but a leading farmer, with a knowledge of the district, thinks this is a low estimate. Many scores of acres will not be cultivatable for months. Major Chaff ey, who came through' from "Waiau yesterday, states that in that district the rains have not done much damage. Speaking of the havoc wrought between the Ashley and Rangiora, he expressed the opinion that the damage was of a more serious nature than that which rf suited from the Oheviot earthquakes. In addition to paddocks being covered with river nit, on the gcrsa hedges for a mile or -o mangolds are hanging like clusters of grapes.
