ATTEMPTED SUICIDE.
[ A man named Daniel M'Farlane, 33 years of age, attempted to commit suicide by jumping off the Rattray street wharf into tho harbour on Wednesday afternoon. 'His action was noticed by people on the wharf at the time, and someone threw a lifebuoy to him, which he secured and -with, -jrhich he kept, himself affoat until a boat came to ! his assistance. The police were sent for, and when' Sergeant Lyons 'and Constable • Marshall reached the wharf they found the man stark *iaked in one of the sheds with bis clothes beside bun. He.asked-them for . some chloroform, as hf " waiited'to put him- ! self right." >It was "with difficulty chat the \ officers prevailed upon' " him to put his clothes on, and when he had at last dressed himself he was taken to the police station. His mother, who resides at Musselburgh, met the oolice at the wharf, and stated to them that her eon had only returned to his home on Tuesday, after an absence of 15 months. He told her he had boen drugged. He was shaky and nervous, evidently suffering from the effects of a drinking bout. Dr Macphcr^on saw him, and on his advice the man was taken to the Hospital yesterday afternoon r and handed over fo the attendants/ Immediately afterwards he cleared out of the Hospital and made his way to the wharf. When the polite took "him to the station 'about 4 o'clock it was thought advisable to again send him to the Hospital, and he was conveyed there 111 a cab.
