When there is a, vacancy there are usually a large number of applicants, and preference would be given to those having previous experience. For the trip Home the remuneration vonlcl be small, but there is usually an opportunity of making something out of "tips"' >from the passengers. If you make application to any of the shipping companies — Tor instance, the New Zealand Shipping Company or ShawSavill, they will put your name down, but you. will not have much chance unless you can bring some influence to bear. Subscriber, Makarewa.— Wash the skins thoroughly in soapsuds, and afterward? ric&e m clean watei. Foi black: Work the skins for 20 minutes in 9 bath with Boz camwood; lift and add Boz copperas ; work the skins in- this for another 20 minutes, then withdraw the fire from the boiler, and submerge the skins in the liquor over mght. In the morning remove the skins and wash them in clear watei . Then work them for an hour in another bath containing a decoction of slb logwood and one pint of chamber lye. At the end o{ the hour remove the skins and ndd 4or copperas to the bath ; work the skins in this for 20 minutes, then rinse m clear water, and dry. Etd Work the =kin» for 20 minutes in a bath made up with loz each of chrome and alum : then wash the skins and work them for 30 minutes in another bath with 3lb peachwood or limawood. Remove the skins, add loz alum to the bath, and work the skins in it for 20 minutes ; wash anS dry them. Yellow. Work for 20 minutes in r bath containing Boz tartar and Boz alum; lift, add 21b bark, Boz fumach, Soz fustic, and a pint of red spirits. Work 40 minutes, wash, and dry. Olive. — (1) Birdlime may be made horn the inner bark of the holly and also from linseed oil. Iv making it from the latter put half a- pint of linseed oil into an old pot — not more than a-third full. Put it on a slow fire, stir it Dcca&ionally until it thickens as much as lequired, which will bo known by cooling the stick in water, and testing it with the fingers. It is best made i-ather hard. When thick enough, pour it into cold water. It can bo brought back to the consistency required by mixing it with a little coal tar. (2) Yes, at the Dresden, Princes street. Ht.cord. — A publican ceitamly has a right to refuse to supply alcoholic liquor to any person at any time. Fbeehold. — You do not need a license to use your own (freehold land for any lawful purpose you please. All gold and silver belong to the Crown, but there is no recent case in •which it has b?en sought to prevent the owner of the land mining for them in his own land. If such an owner applied for a holding under "The Mining Act, 1593," he would then be fully authorised to mine fcr gold and silver. Conway. — (1) The subjects of the matriculation examination comprise English, arithmetic, Algebra, Euclid, Latin, Greek, French, German, history, geography, elementary mechanics, physics, chemistry and biology, the elements of music and drawing. Every ;andidate is required to pass in at least seven subjects, except those who take Latfn or Greek, who are required to pass in six subjects. Every candidate is required to pass in English, arithmetic, and at least one of the foreign languages — Latin, Greek, French, or German.
