The War Memorial. TO THE EDITOR.
Kir, — I again refer to this subject, as the time is opportune. It is patent that the memorial must be errctsd in this rity, as it is the capital of tlie province, and I beg" to make the following suggestions: — 1. Each county should have a separate space, headed with the name of the county, '"Bruce," " Maniototc," etc., and in that space should be inserted the name of every trooper who has fallen, and who came from within the county boundaries. All boroughs and road boards within the area to be included in the county for this purpose. (Note. — This will give each eouuty a special interest in the memorial, and will serve toj show how widespread the. sacrifice has been.)" 2. The design and form of the memorial to be decided by a conference of chairmen and delegates from public and other bodies. 3. An immediate effort should be made to secure from South Africa four captured guns — one for each comer. 4 That collections should be made by every local body in the province and by every .chool in the province, special and duly authorised cards being issued for that purpose, e\ery card to have a band of the colour^ of the war ribbons of the Vaal States, and to be signed by the treasurer, countersigned by the secretary, numbered, and duly iecorded 5. The press of the pro\iace to open lists. 6 Heaiy inclhidual subscriptions should be discouraged. E\ery person will be willing to give something towards this object, and the school children especially should b© encouraged to contribute. 7. On a fixed date collections should be made simultaneously in eveiy churrh in the. pro\ince, special services being held where possible. 8. On an appointed day a snbpenption should be taken up in the .streets of the main towns of the province. 9. A compact and capable central :ommittee should be set up in Dunedin, and I feel confident that the Patriotic Committee, which, under -various designations, has beeu honoured by the confidence of the community during the war, would act if afl-ed. I have said nothing about Southland, thinking that the south might wish to have a separate memorial : but if they would throw in their lot with us sc much the belter. It would then be the Otago and Southland memorial. I trust, however, there will be no further delay, as the time is mostT opportune. — I am > c * fl ' I Johk V. 51. Frasee.
