SUPREME COURT SITTINGS. INVERCARGILL, March 5.

Five young men — William Dormer. William Johnston. Archibald Leckie, Michael Di-ndon, Nelson, and Charles Kirkton, — who were found guilty of riotously assembling to commit damage, were sentenced to three months' hard labour. The Chief Jubtice baitl that this was not a serious ca3e. and he believed it was entirely due to the accused having got semi-intoxicated. If they hat], not gone into the witness box and told an untrue story lie would not have been inclined to pass any punishment on them. Georgo Carlyle was charged with, by means of false pretences, obtaining £6 16s 6d and goods and a horse from Geo F. Johnson The effrnces were committed on December 6 and 9, 1895. The Jury found a verdict of guilty, with a recommendation to mercy on account of the lapse of time and the loose manner in which the transactions had been conducted. Sentence was defeired. March 6.

At the Supreme Court to-day, the Chipf Justice sentenced George Carlyle to six months' imprisonment for false prclcnces. His Honor said that if the prisoner had not gone into the box and sworn falsely, and charged others with perjury, he would have admitted him to probation.
