WELLINGTON NOTES.
St- Oscaamawk.
March 8. Waiwera's brother, Gipsy Jack, who is trained at the Hutt, has been engaged in the jumping races at the Wairarapa Racing Club meeting. * Visitors to the Otaki meetings will be pleased j to learn, that the club intends to effect several j necessary improvements. At a recent meet- j ing' of the stewards of the club*, it was decided to erect a stewards' and people's stand on- the* j course. The present buildings-, now used as 'jockeys' room, etc., a-re to He removed to the opposite side of the track, and the new stewards' stand (which i& to be similar to the stewards' stand oi the Foxton Club) is to be erected on the spot. The old buildings are to be converted into a public stand; with refreshment i-oomsi etc., underneath. Lavinia, who scored on- the- second day of the -Wanganui- meeting, has- a record of three- starts and three wins. She i&very ladylike, and will, J am- confident, turn out the best of the S-tep-niafc—Glauvina family. Laureate, also trained at Porirua, ran third to Lavinia. I remarked thi3 fact to-day to one of the gentlemen who race- as. Douglas Gordon, and he informed me that the horses belonging to the two stables are never tried together. During my visit to Woodviile last week, I accepted Mr John Harris's welcome invitation to see the thoroughbreds running out on the Hon. J. D. Ormond's property, situated about two miles- out of Woodviile. Accompanied by jir D. Campion, owner of Laurestiua, we renewed acquaintance with North Atlantic, the Great Autumn Handicap winner of 1895, who looks really well on it, and appears to be thoroughly enjoying a lengthy and well-earned, spell. Othersi taking matters easily are Honours (Dreadnought — Queen of Trumps), a six-year-old grey mare; Foudre (by Dreadnought — Lyre), and Daring (Dreadnought — Elflock), who makes a ficst-class hack. There is a mob of youngsters by Flintlock running on. the estate, who are to be sent lo Palmerston North during the course of a week or two for sale. Shear sby scored at Wanganui with Queen's Guard and w estguard. Both mares are very well at present, have been judiciously placed, and are not overrated by our weight adjustors. C. Jenkins is aleo seen to the best advantage on them. There appears to be a fatality attached to the progeny of the St. Aubyn mare Fides. Philosopher and Sincerirv, her progeny of 1880 and 1877 respectively, were both killed at the Reefton race meeting of 1884. Kahurangi, a son of Fides's daughter The Gem, dropped dead' at Riccarton'; Silence, by Sornnus — Regret (a daughter of Fides), died at Wastport; Lasting; from. Confidante (daughter of Fides), dropped dead at the Egmont meeting. I understand: that tho gallop 3 done by No- . nette and Tortulla prior to tho race were good enough to win any Wanganui Cup. The winner had to put up a record for the race, while Tcrtulla equalled the previous record held by Advance (3.4) and carried 231b more. Her performance on the second day was also a particularly fine effort. It ia doubtful if St. Michael could have scored' had he been on the scene. ThoHo who followed' the stable and backed' tho ! unworthy brother to M-eiischikoffi (Skobeloff) fell in badly. Mi Evitfr is deserviEg of praise for the manner he brougW/ the horses together. | I:Ieal ran as welL as expected. Melwood and The Shannon had no chance of winning. A. Xapier correspondent informs me that Waionui has lost his nesr eye as the result of the accident at Woodviile. The jockey Lowry is making progress in the Napier Hospital. Polly Perkins, who is racing in pony events at Auckland, is by Perkin Warbeck II — Inez, a smart mare by Albany — Zelica, who carried Mr Victor Harris's colours. ! Madman fell in the Hack Hurdles on the first day at Wanganui. He is by. Sou'-westen, j and when he settles down a- bit will be useful. I Re is aporopriately named. The Hark Handicap winners at Warginui, Tradewmd and Lavinifl, will be found holding their own ul better compan" latei on. Both are only three years old. The monthly meeting of stewards of the Wellington Racing: Club was held on Wednesday lest. The secretary of the- JSketahuna Hack Racing Club wrote asking 'for- the removal of the disqualification of persons a-nd horses that took pavt in a- meeting on Bo::ing Day. .Theseoretary was directed, to obtain fuEtlreu information and report.
